Dr. Torsten Schmitz is a Paediatrician, Paediatric Emergency Care Specialist and Global Health expert working as clinical consultant in the Digital Health Unit at the Swiss Centre for International Health of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. He has 10+ years’ experience in Global and Digital Health focusing on the development, implementation and evaluation of digital health tools for health systems strengthening support in Low- and Middle-Income countries. His current project engagements comprise the clinical coordination and deployment of digital Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) for Paediatric Primary Care consultations and Health Management Information Systems in countries south and north of the Sahara. Alongside his specialty training in paediatrics, he gained experience in tropical medicine during engagements in humanitarian aid projects in the Philippines, Guatemala and through work with refugee families following the European refugee crisis in 2015 and after. His main areas of clinical expertise include the management of acute paediatric emergencies, pre- and postnatal care / neonatology, malnutrition management, paediatric infectious and respiratory disease. He has broad experience as instructor of medical teaching and training activities, including training of trainers and clinical simulation scenarios.
